Best Authentic Puerto Rican Coquito – Easy Homemade Recipe

Puerto Rican coquito - featured image

This light and creamy Puerto Rican coquito is the coconutty, spiced cousin of eggnog, perfect for holiday celebrations. It’s quick to make with simple ingredients and gets even better after a day in the fridge.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) cream of coconut (like Coco López or Goya)
  • 1 can (13.5 oz) full-fat coconut milk, shaken well
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for garnish
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup white rum (like Bacardi or Don Q), optional
  • Cinnamon sticks, for garnish
  • Shredded coconut (toasted or plain), for garnish

Instructions

  1. Open the can of cream of coconut and scoop it into a blender. Add the coconut milk, evaporated milk, and sweetened condensed milk.
  2. Add the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and pinch of salt.
  3. Blend on medium speed until smooth and fully combined, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Scrape down the sides if needed.
  4. Pour in the rum and blend on low just until incorporated. For a non-alcoholic version, skip this step or add an extra splash of coconut milk.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired (more cinnamon, condensed milk, or rum).
  6. Optional: Strain the coquito through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher or bottle for an ultra-smooth texture.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  8. Stir or shake well before serving. Pour into small glasses and garnish with a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or toasted shredded coconut.

Notes

All ingredients should be at room temperature before blending for a smoother texture. Do not over-blend after adding the rum to avoid frothiness. The coquito gets better after a day or two in the fridge. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and add an extra ½ cup of coconut milk or a splash of vanilla extract.
