Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc
  • 2 cups (480 ml) high-quality apple cider (unfiltered preferred)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) bourbon or whiskey (optional; substitute with spiced rum or omit)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) caramel sauce, plus more for rimming glasses
  • 1 medium Honeycrisp apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium pear, cored and thinly sliced (Anjou or Bartlett)
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries (optional)
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) caramel sauce (for rim)
  • 1/4 cup coarse sea salt or flaky sea salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, for sweeter rim)
  • Apple slices and cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salted Caramel Rim: In a small shallow bowl, pour 1/4 cup caramel sauce. In another shallow bowl, combine 1/4 cup coarse sea salt and 1/4 cup granulated sugar (if using). Dip the rim of each serving glass into the caramel sauce, coating evenly. Let excess drip off, then dip into the salt-sugar mixture. Set aside to set.
  2. Prepare the Fruit: Core and thinly slice the apple and pear. Rinse cranberries if using fresh.
  3. Combine the Liquid Ingredients: In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, apple cider, bourbon (if using), 1/4 cup caramel sauce, and vanilla extract. Stir vigorously until caramel is fully dissolved.
  4. Add the Fruit and Spices: Gently add sliced apple, pear, cranberries, and cinnamon sticks to the pitcher. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Chill and Infuse: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably 4-6 hours or overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Serve: Stir gently. Fill prepared salted caramel-rimmed glasses with ice (optional). Pour sangria into glasses, including some fruit and a cinnamon stick in each serving. Garnish with an extra apple slice if desired.

Notes

For best flavor, chill for at least 4-6 hours or overnight. Use firm apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith to avoid mushiness. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with non-alcoholic white wine or more apple cider and ginger ale, and omit bourbon. The caramel rim is best done no more than an hour before serving.
