These sticky honey garlic salmon bowls are quick, easy, and perfect for weeknights. Tender salmon fillets are coated in a sweet and savory glaze, served over rice with fresh veggies for a complete meal in about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each, skin on or off)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice or brown rice
  • 2 cups steamed broccoli florets
  • 1 cup shelled edamame
  • 1 large carrot, julienned or shredded
  • 1 avocado, sliced

Instructions

  1. Start the rice first. Rinse 1 cup of jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Add it to a pot with 1 1/2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 more minutes. Fluff with a fork. If using brown rice, allow about 40 minutes total cooking time.
  2. While the rice cooks, make the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, minced garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and grated ginger. Set aside.
  3. Prep the salmon. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Season both sides lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. Steam the broccoli. Cut the broccoli into small florets. Steam them in a steamer basket over boiling water for about 3-4 minutes, until bright green and tender-crisp. You can also microwave them in a bowl with 2 tablespoons of water for 2 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  5. Sear the salmon. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in your large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Carefully place the salmon fillets skin-side down (if using skin-on) in the pan. Cook without moving them for 4 minutes. The skin should be golden and crispy. Flip the fillets gently using your spatula.
  6. Add the glaze. Pour the honey garlic mixture into the pan around the salmon fillets. Reduce the heat to medium. As the glaze cooks, it will start to bubble and thicken. Use a spoon to baste the salmon with the glaze as it reduces. This takes about 2-3 minutes. The glaze should become sticky and coat the salmon beautifully.
  7. Check for doneness. The salmon is done when it flakes easily with a fork and the internal temperature reaches 145°F. If you don’t have a thermometer, look for the flesh to turn from translucent to opaque and feel firm to the touch. Be careful not to overcook.
  8. Assemble the bowls. Divide the cooked rice between four bowls. Top each with a salmon fillet, a generous spoonful of the extra glaze from the pan, steamed broccoli, edamame, shredded carrot, and sliced avocado.
  9. Garnish and serve. Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions over each bowl. Serve immediately while everything is warm and the glaze is still sticky.

Notes

Pat the salmon dry for a good sear. Don’t crowd the pan; cook in batches if needed. Watch the glaze carefully as honey burns quickly. Use a fish spatula for easier flipping. Let the glaze rest on the salmon for a minute off the heat to set. Prep all ingredients before cooking for a smoother process.
