Quick and nostalgic deviled ham tea sandwiches with a creamy, tangy filling perfect for parties and tea time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 7 ounces canned deviled ham (about 200 grams), smooth spreadable variety
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (60 ml), preferably full-fat
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (15 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish (30 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional)
  • 8 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter (30 grams)

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine canned deviled ham, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and sweet pickle relish. Stir gently until smooth and evenly blended. Add ground black pepper if desired.
  2. Lay out 8 slices of white sandwich bread and trim off the crusts. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on each slice.
  3. Spread the deviled ham filling evenly over 4 slices of the buttered bread. Top each with a plain buttered slice and gently press down.
  4. Cut each sandwich into triangles or finger-sized rectangles. Arrange on a serving platter. Cover with a damp paper towel and plastic wrap if not serving immediately.

Notes

Use softened butter to prevent sogginess. Spread filling thinly for delicate sandwiches. Assemble close to serving time or cover tightly to keep bread moist. Gluten-free and dairy-free substitutions available.
