apple cider old fashioned - featured image

A warm, spiced twist on the classic Old Fashioned, this cocktail combines bourbon, fresh apple cider, and maple syrup for a cozy fall drink that comes together in just five minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Fresh Apple Cider
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) Pure Maple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters (optional)
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (for garnish)
  • 1 strip Orange Peel (for garnish)
  • Ice (1 large cube or 2-3 standard cubes)

Instructions

  1. Chill your rocks glass in the freezer for 10 minutes (optional but recommended).
  2. In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz bourbon, 2 oz apple cider, 1/2 oz maple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters (if using). Stir gently for about 5 seconds.
  3. Fill the mixing glass with ice (3-4 standard cubes or one large cube). Stir continuously for 20-30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
  4. Place one large ice cube or 2-3 standard cubes in your chilled (or room-temperature) rocks glass.
  5. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass using a fine mesh strainer (if using standard ice) or pour directly if using a large cube.
  6. Express the orange peel over the drink by twisting it with the colored side facing down, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it in.
  7. Add the whole cinnamon stick to the glass, letting it rest against the ice.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

For a stronger apple flavor, let the cinnamon stick sit in the cider for 10 minutes before mixing. Don’t over-stir—20-30 seconds is the sweet spot. Use a medium-proof bourbon for best results. Batch the liquid ingredients (without ice and garnishes) for parties and refrigerate up to 3 days.
