This light and creamy crockpot peppermint hot chocolate is rich enough to feel like a real treat, but light enough that you don’t feel sluggish. It’s perfect for holiday parties, snow days, or any day that needs a little warming up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups low-fat milk (2%)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional for serving: crushed candy canes, mini marshmallows, or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prep your slow cooker: spray with non-stick cooking spray or wipe with butter.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder with about 1/2 cup of the low-fat milk until smooth paste forms.
  3. Pour the remaining milk, heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, cocoa paste, vanilla extract, and salt into the slow cooker. Stir well.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours.
  5. After 1 hour, whisk the mixture to help chocolate chips melt and prevent skin from forming.
  6. After 2 hours, stir in the peppermint extract. Start with 1/4 teaspoon, taste, and add more if desired.
  7. Switch slow cooker to ‘warm’ setting to keep hot chocolate drinkable for 3-4 hours. If it thickens, stir in a splash of milk.
  8. Ladle into mugs and garnish with crushed candy canes, marshmallows, or whipped cream.

Notes

Start with 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract and adjust to taste. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. The hot chocolate will thicken as it cools; add a splash of milk when reheating. Can be made a day ahead and reheated.
