Easy Dried Orange Slices for Holiday Garnish

Easy dried orange slices - featured image

Transform fresh oranges into beautiful, fragrant dried slices perfect for garnishing holiday treats, cocktails, and decorations. This simple oven method requires just one ingredient and a few hours to create stunning, edible decorations that will make your home smell incredible.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3–4 large fresh oranges (navel, blood, or Cara Cara)
  • Optional: granulated sugar for dusting
  • Optional: cinnamon or cardamom for spiced version

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).
  2. Wash the oranges thoroughly under warm water and dry them with a clean towel.
  3. Slice the oranges evenly into 1/4 inch (6mm) thick slices using a sharp knife.
  4. Blot the slices with paper towels on both sides to remove excess surface moisture.
  5. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet or on a wire rack placed on a baking sheet, ensuring they do not overlap.
  6. Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours. After 90 minutes, flip each slice over to ensure even drying.
  7. Start checking at the 2.5 hour mark. The slices should be dry to the touch but still slightly pliable. They will continue to firm up as they cool.
  8. Cool completely on the baking sheet for at least 30 minutes before handling or storing.

Notes

Thickness is crucial: aim for 1/4 inch slices. Too thin and they burn; too thick and they won’t dry properly. Blotting slices before baking reduces drying time significantly. Every oven runs differently; check frequently the first time. Let slices cool completely before judging doneness—they firm up as they cool. For best results, use within the first week for brightest color and strongest citrus aroma. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 weeks or in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Do not freeze.
