This easy gluten-free green bean casserole with crispy onions is creamy, crunchy, and completely gluten-free. It comes together in under 30 minutes using frozen green beans, canned soup, and store-bought crispy onions, making it perfect for busy weeknights or holiday dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz frozen green beans (whole or cut, not French-style)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) gluten-free cream of mushroom soup (e.g., Pacific Foods or Progresso)
  • ½ cup milk or dairy-free alternative (whole milk recommended, or unsweetened almond/oat milk)
  • 1 ½ cups gluten-free crispy onions (e.g., French’s original)
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon butter or dairy-free margarine (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Let frozen green beans sit on the counter for about 5 minutes to separate.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk until smooth. If using optional butter, melt it and stir in.
  3. Add the frozen green beans to the bowl and fold with a spatula until every bean is coated.
  4. Pour the mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  5. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes, until the sauce is bubbling around the edges and beans are tender but still have a bite.
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle crispy onions evenly over the top. Do not stir.
  7. Return to oven and bake for another 5-7 minutes, until onions are golden and fragrant. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use unsweetened oat milk or canned coconut milk and dairy-free margarine. To make ahead, assemble the casserole (without onions) up to 24 hours in advance, cover with foil, and refrigerate. Add 10 minutes to the first bake time, then add onions for the final 5-7 minutes. For extra crunch, mix crispy onions with ¼ cup crushed gluten-free crackers or potato chips before topping.
