These mummy pigs in a blanket are a quick, fun, and foolproof Halloween treat that kids absolutely love. Made with crescent dough wrapped around hot dogs and topped with mustard seed eyes, they come together in under 20 minutes using simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 8 hot dogs (standard size, such as Oscar Mayer or Hebrew National)
  • Mustard seeds or black decorating gel (for eyes)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional: Everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Unroll the crescent dough onto a clean cutting board. If using perforated dough, press the seams together gently to form one solid rectangle.
  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough lengthwise into 8 even strips, each about 1 inch wide.
  4. Cut each strip in half crosswise to make 16 shorter strips.
  5. Take one hot dog and start wrapping a strip of dough around it at a slight angle, leaving a small gap near the top for the eyes. Then take a second strip and wrap it in the opposite direction, overlapping slightly. Leave about half an inch of hot dog exposed at the top for the face.
  6. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. If the dough ends start to unroll, tuck them under the hot dog or secure with a toothpick.
  7. Press two mustard seeds or small dots of black decorating gel into the exposed hot dog at the top of each mummy for eyes.
  8. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the egg wash over the dough strips.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and puffy. If the dough browns too quickly, tent the pan loosely with foil.
  10. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter and add any extra eyes if needed.

Notes

For best results, use standard-size hot dogs and room-temperature hot dogs. Leave space for the eyes. You can assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate. Freeze unbaked for up to 3 months. For a flakier result, use puff pastry instead of crescent dough.
