Easy Mummy Stuffed Pretzel Bites - featured image

These adorable mummy stuffed pretzel bites are made with frozen pretzel dough and string cheese, wrapped to look like little mummies. They come together in about 30 minutes and are perfect for Halloween parties.

Ingredients

  • Frozen pretzel dough, thawed (about 450g or 1 pound)
  • String cheese sticks (about 6 sticks, each cut into thirds)
  • Large egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • Yellow mustard (for the eyes)
  • Baking soda (optional, for boiling water bath)
  • Butter, melted (for brushing after baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Thaw your pretzel dough according to package directions (usually 30-60 minutes at room temperature).
  3. Cut each string cheese stick into thirds to get 18 small cheese logs. Set aside.
  4. Divide the pretzel dough into 18 equal pieces. Roll each into a small ball, then flatten into a rectangle about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide.
  5. Place one cheese piece in the center of each dough rectangle. Fold the dough over the cheese and pinch the seams to seal completely.
  6. Roll each filled dough ball into an oval shape about 2 inches long.
  7. Cut the remaining dough into thin strips about ¼ inch wide (3-4 strips per mummy). Stretch each strip slightly.
  8. Wrap each mummy with the dough strips, leaving a small space at the top for the eyes. Cross the strips randomly.
  9. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add ⅓ cup of baking soda. Carefully drop each mummy into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make the egg wash. Brush each mummy generously with the egg wash.
  11. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt while the egg wash is still wet.
  12. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pretzels are deep golden brown. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  13. Add the mustard eyes using a toothpick or the tip of a knife—dab two small dots in the exposed area.
  14. Brush with melted butter for a glossy finish. Serve warm.

Notes

Don’t skip the boiling step for authentic pretzel texture. Keep cheese cold for easier wrapping. Seal dough completely to prevent cheese leakage. For make-ahead, assemble without egg wash and salt, refrigerate up to 24 hours, then add egg wash and salt before baking. Freeze unbaked for up to 2 months.
