This easy small-batch chocolate chip cookie recipe is perfect for those late-night cravings when you want a warm, homemade treat without the commitment of a full batch. It yields exactly six soft, chewy, and delicious cookies in about 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until well combined.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  7. Scoop the dough into 6 equal balls using a small cookie scoop or tablespoon. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers look slightly underdone.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely or serve warm.

Notes

For gooey cookies, bake for 8 minutes. For slightly crisper cookies, bake for 10 minutes. If you want picture-perfect cookies, press a few extra chocolate chips into the tops right after baking. The dough can be chilled for 30 minutes for a thicker, chewier cookie.
