Quick and easy apple dumplings made with refrigerated biscuit dough and a simple homemade caramel sauce. Perfect for a cozy fall dessert that comes together in under 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits (like Pillsbury Grands!)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the apples: Peel if desired, cut each apple in half, core with a melon baller or teaspoon, then cut each half into two wedges (8 wedges total).
  3. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg.
  4. Open the can of biscuits and separate into 8 biscuits. Flatten each biscuit to about 3-4 inches in diameter.
  5. Place one apple wedge in the center of each flattened biscuit. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Bring edges up around apple and pinch to seal. Place seam-side down in prepared dish.
  6. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until biscuits are golden brown and apples are tender. Let cool 5 minutes.
  8. While dumplings bake, make caramel sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and heavy cream. Whisk constantly until melted and smooth. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and sea salt.
  9. Serve warm dumplings drizzled with caramel sauce.

Notes

For best results, use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Seal dumplings well to prevent leakage. Watch caramel closely to avoid burning. Can be made gluten-free or dairy-free with substitutions. Best served warm the day they are made.
