Refreshing Patriotic Sangria with Mixed Berries Pitcher

Refreshing Patriotic Sangria - featured image

A quick and easy sangria recipe featuring fresh mixed berries, citrus, and red wine, perfect for summer parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine (fruity, medium-bodied like Spanish Garnacha or California Zinfandel)
  • 2 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen blueberries, hulled and sliced strawberries, raspberries)
  • 1 medium orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water dissolved)
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional, e.g., Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1 cup sparkling water
  • A handful fresh mint leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the mixed berries gently under cold water and pat dry. Hull and slice the strawberries, and slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds.
  2. Place the berries in the bottom of a large pitcher. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, press down gently to release their juices without turning them into a puree (about 2 minutes).
  3. Add the sliced orange and lemon to the pitcher, then pour in the simple syrup. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Slowly add the bottle of red wine and the orange liqueur, if using. Stir everything together to blend the flavors.
  5. Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4 or more, to let the flavors marry.
  6. Just before serving, pour in chilled sparkling water to add fizz and freshness. Stir gently to combine.
  7. Serve over ice in glasses, garnished with fresh mint leaves if desired.

[‘Do not over-muddle the berries to avoid a cloudy, pulpy sangria.’, ‘Use a fruity, medium-bodied red wine for best flavor; avoid heavy or tannic wines.’, ‘Adjust sweetness by adding simple syrup gradually after chilling.’, ‘Chill thoroughly for best taste; add ice cubes before serving if desired.’, ‘Prepare the sangria up to 24 hours in advance and add sparkling water and ice just before serving.’, ‘For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine and liqueur with grape juice, cranberry juice, and sparkling water.’, “If you don’t have a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon or a clean bottle can be used.”, ‘Keep equipment clean and dry to preserve fresh fruit flavors.’]
