This spooky Halloween graveyard charcuterie board is the centerpiece of your party—the one that gets the gasps and the ‘wait, you made this?’ reactions. It comes together in under 30 minutes and uses simple ingredients to create a visually stunning and delicious appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf dark pumpernickel bread, torn into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano (optional)
  • 810 rectangular crackers (like water crackers or rosemary flatbreads)
  • Black food-safe marker
  • 68 pretzel sticks, broken in half
  • 1 small bag of gummy worms
  • 1 small bag of candy eyeballs
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cut into cubes
  • 6 ounces smoked gouda, sliced
  • 4 ounces prosciutto, thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces salami, sliced
  • 1 cup mixed olives (green and kalamata)
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup roasted almonds
  • 1 small bunch red grapes, washed and left on the stem

Instructions

  1. Make the ‘Dirt’ (5 minutes): Tear the pumpernickel bread into chunks and place them in a food processor. Pulse until you get a coarse, crumbly texture—like soil, not dust. Stir in the black sesame seeds and oregano if using. Set aside in a bowl.
  2. Prepare the Tombstones (10 minutes): Take your rectangular crackers and use the black food-safe marker to write spooky messages on each one. Let them dry for a minute. Break the pretzel sticks in half—these will be the grave markers or fence posts.
  3. Assemble the Board Base (5 minutes): Place your large board on a flat surface. If using parchment paper, lay it down now. Spread the ‘dirt’ mixture evenly across one half of the board, creating a thick, even layer.
  4. Build the Graveyard (10 minutes): Press the pretzel sticks into the dirt at angles. Place the cracker tombstones upright, leaning them against the pretzels or sticking them into the dirt. Scatter the gummy worms around, making some look like they’re crawling out of the soil. Tuck the candy eyeballs in random spots.
  5. Arrange the Charcuterie (10 minutes): On the other half of the board, start placing your cheese cubes, sliced gouda, prosciutto, and salami. Fold the prosciutto into loose ribbons. Add the olives, dried apricots, almonds, and grapes in small clusters.
  6. Final Touches (5 minutes): Take a step back and look at your board. Fill any empty gaps with extra crackers or a few more gummy worms. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 hours.

Notes

The dirt will look best if made fresh. If it sits too long, the bread absorbs moisture and gets clumpy. Don’t over-process the bread; pulse in short bursts until it looks like coarse sand. Use room-temperature cheese for better flavor. Keep gummy worms separate until serving to prevent stickiness. Prep all ingredients before starting assembly.
